"I was fine, until I retired!"

I have heard this line from so many of my patients that I felt it time to say something about it.
Our health is a product of so many aspects in our lives. Diet, emotional stress, physical stress and exercise are probably the major ones. So having shed those long working hours shouldn’t we all have more energy and feel better than we ever did?
Well, as children, we would be running, jumping and generally charging about – naturally using the full range of motion of pretty much all our joints. In our working lives we face a whole range of new stresses, jobs that may confine us to chairs or bent double trying to build or repair something and of course.. DIET! “What diet?” I hear you say. Do we eat for our health? Or do we eat to fill that empty space as quickly as possible before the next email or job comes in?
Then comes retirement, a chance to take it easy? Do those things that have been on the back burner? Lay the new patio perhaps? But before we launch into this
new-found playground of activity, have we considered whether we are ready? I don’t think I would be exaggerating if I said that we probably worry about our car tyre pressures more than we do our diet, or physical state – until something goes wrong. How many of us consider whether we have a good range of motion in our necks or backs? In adult life, we drive our bodies with the expectation that they will simply just keep going without a puff of air, drop of oil or bit of a shine. Is it any wonder then that as we get older and have the chance to lay that patio – our bodies have another idea?
Thankfully, all is not lost. Much to the amazement of many of my more ‘mature’ patients, a faithful adherence to an exercise program that I have provided, specifically for their condition, can start to ‘unwind’ the restrictions in the body – providing greater range of motion, a reduction in pain and hopefully.. the new patio!
So, ask yourself, when was the last time you cared about your health as much as your car tyre pressures!
